The instructions from Earthlink Tech Support with modifications
for configuring Outlook 2002 to check a newsgarden.org pop3
e-mail account.
It may be that you can just include the information in step
#8 (below) on the web site, and add it to the page that contains
information about applying for/setting up a newsgarden.org e-mail
account. The incoming/outgoing server information is already
listed there, so you could easily add a notation that Earthlink
users should use smtpauth.earthlink.net as their outgoing (SMTP)
server since Earthlink blocks Port 25. However, an Earthlink
user would also need to know that the outgoing mail server requires
authentication
===================================
Note: Earthlink blocks Port 25. All of their users are required
to use Earthlinks outgoing mail (SMTP) server to send
email, if Earthlink is the current ISP they are using to connect
to the net.
1. Open Outlook 2002
2. Go to Tools -> E=mail accounts
3. Select "Add a new e-mail account" then click Next
4. Select POP3, then click Next
5. Type in User Information (Your Name, username@newsgarden.org)
6. Type in Login Information for your newsgarden.org account
(Username, Password)
7. Find the line labeled Incoming mail server (POP3)
and type in: pop.newsgarden.org
8. Find the line labeled "Outgoing mail server (SMTP)"
and type in: smtpauth.earthlink.net
9. Click on the "More Settings" button
10. Click on the "Outgoing Server" tab
11. Check the box labeled "My Outgoing server (SMTP) requires
authentication"
12. Select "Log on Using"
13. Type in your full e-mail address as the account name (username@earthlink.net)
14. Type in your Earthlink account password
15. Click OK
16. Click Next
17. Click Finish
You are now all set to send mail using Earthlinks new
authenticated SMTP server. Make sure you delete anything in
the Outbox before testing. Also, keep in mind that this will
not work if your current ISP (other than Earthlink) blocks Port
25.
.Hope this helps someone so they dont have to go through
the headache I went through trying to figure this out!
